Camping in Croatia

Croatia welcomes you with numerous hours of sunshine, warm temperatures and fantastic swimming opportunities. If you don’t want to drive that far, you’re in good hands in the north. The Istrian peninsula or the Karner Bay are only about a nine-hour drive away from the center of Germany. You shouldn’t miss the Plitvice Lakes in the north. They’re dreamlike turquoise green lakes embedded in the surrounding mountains.

Dalmatia is a little more south, but still easy to reach via the motorway. Here you can marvel at rugged rock formations and culturally interesting cities like Trogir or Dubrovnik. Incidentally, both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. National parks can also be admired in the southern part. There are for instance the Krka waterfalls, which plunge down over 46 meters, or the Paklenica National Park with its dizzying canyons, a hotspot for hikers and climbers.

Which documents do you need?
As a EU citizen, you just need a valid identity card or passport to travel to Croatia and you can even stay there for 3 months. We recommend that children and young people under the age of 18 who travel without the supervision of a legal guardian carry a declaration of consent with them. While this is not required by law, it can help to avoid problems.You can of course bring your pet with you. However, make sure that you do not forget the EU pet passport and that your pet is marked with a chip or a tattoo. A valid rabies vaccination is also obligatory.

Customs

Please keep the regulations for consumer goods as well as for food and beverages in mind. Certain duty and tax-free allowances also apply within the EU for these product groups. If you exceed these tax allowance limits, you must declare this to customs and have your goods taxed.

Important traffic regulations 

In some areas of Croatia, especially on the border regions with Serbia, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina and on the outskirts of Zadar, there is unfortunately still a mine hazard. Under no circumstances should you leave official roads and paths in these areas.

You should also note that the alcohol limit is, like in Germany, 0.5. For drivers aged under 25 or for drivers of vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons the limit is even 0.0. Don’t forget to switch on the lights in Croatia, especially between the end of October and the end of March you have to drive with your lights on permanently. For your kids you have to use an appropriate child seat or a corresponding booster seat. Winter tires are only compulsory if this is necessary due to the weather and indicated by appropriate traffic signs. However, you should have snow chains with you and use them on snow- and ice-covered roads.The maximum speed for all our campers and motorhomes is 50 km/h within city limits, 90 km/h outside of towns and villages, 110 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Caution! If you are under the age of 25, you have to deduct another 10 km/h outside of towns, on expressways and on motorways. Accordingly, 80 km/h apply on rural roads, 100 km/h on expressways and 120 km/h on motorways. 

General information 

You always have to expect tolls when you use the motorway in Croatia. There are also occasional toll costs when using bridges and tunnels. At the beginning of the toll road, you will receive a ticket that you have to pay for when you leave the toll road. You can usually pay by all major credit or bank cards. If this is too stressful for you and to avoid the annoying waiting time at toll stations, you can also get a transponder at some toll points. Anyway, be sure to include the toll costs in your travel budget. By the way, in Croatia you do not pay in euros but the local currency is called kuna. A kuna corresponds to approximately 13 cents. But don’t worry, credit and bank cards are accepted almost everywhere. If you need cash, we recommend that you conveniently head to the nearest ATM.

Camping in Croatia 

Now let’s talk about the most important topic, camping. Unfortunately, camping outside of campgrounds and caravan sites is completely prohibited in Croatia. Even for one night it is not permitted to stay in a parking lot or on the side of the road. If you don’t stick to that, you will face hefty fines.
